Ideas Surrounding Life Beyond Death

By Georgia Diaz

There are so many stories about life beyond death. This is a theme that occurs all over the world. It is quite interesting that many cultures seem to have very similar ideas about what happens when people die. Just about everyone gives this question some consideration. Many people rely on their religion to get them through the transition into the next world.

Some people are convinced that there is no afterlife. They feel that time on earth is the pinnacle of existence and that nothing special will happen afterwards. However, when faced with their own imminent demise even these non believers often begin to change their minds. If circumstances are very difficult they may even begin to pray.

From a religious perspective there is a clear idea of what will happen to a person after they die. In the Christian faith those believers are absolutely sure that they will reside in heaven with God for eternity. They are often comforted by the thought that they will see their loved ones who died before them. This strong conviction has helped many people get through difficult times.

Many people have a more spiritual than religious outlook. They are not so clear on what they think is going to happen to them after they die. Many people think that they will pass through certain stages of consciousness. At the point of death they will move into a state of being in which all their past concerns will confront them. This includes all the negative thoughts and emotions such as guilt, anger and jealousy.

It is this sense of oneness that occurs so often in thoughts, writings and ideas about what happens after death. For thousands of years people have pondered the question of what happens and where we go. Ancient graves contain many goods that people felt their departed loved ones would need. This clearly indicates a strong belief in another life.

A common theme in many belief systems is the idea that immediately after the time of death the individual will be faced with their own emotional baggage. This is often unresolved feeling particularly anger, guilt or hostility. If they are unable to face it they may have to return to earth and their body. Most people seem able to face this challenge and move on towards the afterlife.

Some people have put forward the idea that our earthly lives are only a trial run for what is to follow. Once we cross over to the other side we will understand what we have been missing. Our human lives will seem shallow, trivial and pointless. They were merely a preparation for the more important after life. Becoming part of the great ultimate universe is far more important that working nine to five on earth.

Ideas about life beyond death vary widely depending on the religious, cultural and educational background of the individual. Some people love to ponder the great question of what will happen when the pass away, whilst others feel quite uncomfortable participating in such a discussion.
