By Jerri Perry

The public could see an elvis tribute carried out in a variety of ways. Grandmothers who grew up listening to Heartbreak Hotel are turning their grandbabies into a third generation of Elvis fans. Women relate fond memories of attending his concerts. Memorabilia is still big business.

His first love of music was for gospel songs. The king of rock and roll won three Grammy Awards for gospel recordings. There are complete collections of all his music still being sold.

The first Grammy was awarded in 1967 for Best Sacred Performance. Then in 1972 he won a second Grammy for Best Inspirational Performance. He won another Grammy in 1974, for the Best Inspirational Song.

Long after his death, he was awarded a Grammy posthumously. This was in 1993 in commemoration of his double-sided hit recording of Hound Dog and Dont Be Cruel. Among his many accolades, perhaps the annual candlelight ceremony on the anniversary of his passing remains the most important.

This annual commemoration takes place on August 16 to honor the man who died at the age of 42. Fans in that line are from Japan, Germany and locations all over the world as well as in the US. Hotels and restaurants in Memphis are filled to overflowing with men in white jumpsuits and blue suede shoes.

There are shows year around in which Presley is emulated. Memphis, Vegas and Branson Missouri are only three of the locations where they perform. The most talented are working to earn a living as Presley impersonators. Clubs, stage shows and private parties are clamoring to hire them. Tours go to cities all over the US.

A new show featuring one group and one single performer are launching a show called From Graceland to the Promised Land. The singer from Australia performs as a single act and the group performs Presleys great gospel hits. Audiences are eager to hear the history of his gospel hits as well as his rock music.

An annual title is awarded to one talented imitator called The Spirit of Elvis Award. He will be someone so perfect that it is as if the king were resurrected. The voice, unique smile and sexy dance moves simulate the originals including those dance moves that scandalized the country in the fifties and sixties.

Festivities in Memphis are attended by fans from all over during the week surrounding his passing. Men in white jumpsuits with eagles on the back and blue suede shoes proliferate in the city. Fans enjoy stage shows and concerts.

Fans collect stuffed hound dogs and purchase memorabilia of all kinds. There are earrings made to look like records, t-shirts bearing his face and telephones made to look like pink Cadillac cars. People eat peanut butter and banana sandwiches.

Other elvis tribute shows include Elvis Lives, which has a regular tour schedule and a Festival held in Europe. The crowds of fans that visit Graceland, his mansion in Memphis, are an ongoing tribute to his unsurpassed talent and popularity. His impact on the world is such that he will be remembered and honored a thousand years from now.
