The Power Of Self Hypnosis For Weight Loss

By Jaclyn Hurley

Ordinarily, people consult hypnotherapists that are skilled in the art of creating trance states in clients for purposes of behavioural change. Inducing such mental states for therapeutic goals involves helping clients achieve a meditative mood of utter tranquillity, so that subconscious reprogramming - stimulated by specific suggestions from the hypnotherapist - can happen easily, and effectively. Self hypnosis for weight loss, or other behavioural change goals, uses the same principles, but without the aid of another person.

Clients generally consult a hypnotherapist to help with changing a negative behaviour or attitude - like smoking, gambling, or chronic anxiety - and to learn a new one. Under hypnotic induction, such efforts toward behavioural change amounts to reprogramming the deeper subconscious mind. Inducing, and working with, the latter mental state is key, since this is where the root of the problem, as well as the solution, resides.

Individuals that are able to self induce a trance-like state for therapeutic purposes generally learn the correct procedure from a hypnotherapist. Hence, newcomers that wish to shed excess fat through this process are better off consulting with the proper professional for guidance first. This would help to ensure achieving the desired outcome, after having learned, and rehearsed, the proper procedure to trigger a state of hypnotic relaxation by oneself.

The essence of reprogramming the subconscious mind under self-created hypnotherapy lies in substituting habitual, self-defeating habits and beliefs with alternative, better ones. This can be achieved through making different, empowering, suggestions to the subconscious that are specific, and in line with one's behavioural change goals. It is also a matter of creating appropriate images, and visualizing many times what it would be like to be the new person one desires to be.

When it comes to losing extra fat through self-initiated hypnotherapy, the first step would be to make a list of the problem behavioural patterns and beliefs that contribute to being overweight. These might include overeating, consuming unhealthy foods, or impulsive eating, or even feelings of anxiety when under stress. For the process to work, it is important to have a clear idea of what the problematic, target beliefs and behaviours are, and what the alternative, wanted ones are, before going into a hypnotic state.

For example, a person might want to change negative thoughts and beliefs like, 'I will never get thinner, ' or, 'there is no point in trying to get rid of extra fat.' In addition, one might want to focus on new, empowering actions that could include eating healthier foods, chewing food slowly, eating smaller portions, and going for regular, brisk walks. Part of the hypnotic reprogramming might also entail imagining oneself actually looking thinner, and wearing clothes that fit comfortably on a trimmed-down body, for instance.

Hypnotically induced suggestions for therapeutic purposes are not about wished-for fantasies. Fantasizing about losing excess pounds is not going to help, if no concrete action is taken to address the issue. Applying under self-generated hypnotherapy is one such action step, and a powerful one that delivers sought-after outcomes, if done correctly, consistently, and with patience.

Chances are that one session of a self-generated hypnotic trance state is not going to be enough to achieve the wanted outcomes. Many people that have unsuccessfully tried to lose weight this operate on the belief that a single session is all that's needed to produce the miracle results. It may not work for everybody, but the success rate of going about the issue this way is high enough to make it a fruitful avenue to explore.
