Taking The Chance With A Movie Script Clearance And A Promotion Agent

By Eric Gibson

So as a budding artist, the following article has sparked interested for one or a number of reasons. The support team by your side keeps telling you to hire a promotion agent for your music but the one question that keeps going through your mind is why? All, are not all money hungry people who make a living off the earnings of others or movie script clearance sales. It is said that information is power and by the time the last word is read, there should be enough information available to make an informed decision.

What is a music promotion agent? It is an individual responsible for the well being and livelihood of an artist. The booking of shows through communication and negotiations with promoters, liaising of contracts on behalf of an artist for various fixtures such as how much an artist is paid for a show, live performances and so on and so forth.

But it is important to distinguish between a music manager and a promotional agent as the two positions are often used interchangeably but are not the same job. Music managers primary roles are to assist with the image of the singer or band they manage, be it through television appearances, press releases and/or interviews but music promotional agents negotiate contracts, find venues to play and may increase the artists audience.

The reason promotional agents charge less is that agents get paid on a commission basis which is a normalised but can range all the way up to over 10 percent depending on the specifics of a contract. Not to mention that there is the need to focus on the fine print so as to not have any nasty surprise.

But all of this does not come for free and remuneration is usually capped at a percentage mark of 20 but as an industry standard is often 10 to 12% commission of what the artist earns. The music promotion agent is not limited to one artist however and can be managing two or three artists at a time.

All of this is not done as a humanitarian effort and requires remuneration. Most music promotion agents, whether managing a small band or a large artist show similar traits. Most of the time the same remuneration structure which often involves payment through a percentage obtained through touring is followed. Most of these percentages range between 10 and 12% but in some instances can go all the way to 20% depending on the contractual agreement.

Now that there is a basic understanding of what musical promotional agents do, it is now important to note that contracts between the artist and musical promotional agents are crucial in order to ensure that there are no disputes over money or commitments or expectations between the artists/band and the manager.

So there is a lot a music production manager can do for your career. Especially when it comes to growing your brand and your audience. Be it is through a chance to play in bigger venues or a bigger chunk of the ticket sales. All that is needed is a little sacrifice and some time on the road.
