On the other hand, men have six different events, including vault, rings, high bar, pommel horse, floor exercises, and parallel bars.

Even though this sport has become global this days, it is of Greek origin. Gymnastics are of different forms which include rhythmic, artistic, and acrobatic. The most popular variety of this sport that has its activities incorporated in most national and international competitions is the artistic gymnastics. Artistic gymnastics has activities for both males and females where males take part in 6 different activities while females engage in only four activities.

The FIG brought about a new system for awarding points in 2006 for artistic gymnastics. In the new system, points awarded to participants are no longer limited to 10. The new system has been welcomed and is being used in elite competitions. In the old system, points were only awarded based on execution. However, in the new system, points are awarded based on the execution and difficulty of routines.

At the start of a performance, every gymnast is awarded 10.00 points for both difficulty and execution scores. These points are deducted with every mistake that the gymnast makes from the beginning to the end of their performance. If the gymnast falls on the stage, a deduction of 1.00 point is made to their points.

Usually, difficulty score is based on the performance elements of the gymnast. The score might get changed in case a gymnast is unable to complete or perform all elements they are supposed to. Point deduction also occurs in case the gymnast is unable to connect techniques that are connected during the execution. There are actual and the intended difficulty scores resulting from deviation bonuses that get awarded by judges.

This sport is normally viewed to be for the young. This is due to the fact that gymnasts start practice when they are toddlers. Due to this, consistent practice and hard work allow them to perfect their skills. They achieve elite gymnast status by the time they become teenagers. Many professional female gymnasts in the US are 16 years old. Skills of the gymnast are stretched to their limits if lessons start at a tender age.

Although gymnastics has become a competitive sport in large part, the Greeks who invented it used it for more than just sports. Both men and women participated in gymnastic activities to maintain good health and strength. Men also participated in gymnastic activities as part of preparing for war.
