Ten - Clown Halloween Costumes: Big Shoes, Slapstick and Evil Chuckles

By Jack Mathieus

Fewer costumes are as versatile as clown Halloween costumes are. Whether you opt for traditional happy clown make up or a scary evil clown mask, you can set the tone of your look to be anything you like. For some, the theme is a happy reminder of childhood joys and good fun. For others, keyword are as terrifying as it gets.

Keep it simple by choosing a wig and baggy pants with big suspenders. Use greasepaint on your face, stick on a bulbous red nose and a silly hat and you're ready to go trick or treating. You can add to this look with oversized shoes, a trick necktie or flower, gloves and a ridiculous hat and easily create the look of a circus clown. The same supplies can be used no matter which tone you choose for your clown disguise.

Clown Halloween costumes are popular due to their versatility. You can choose the tone of your disguise with simple changes in color and props. Taking the basic clown character that is silly and funny, sad or clumsy and twisting the concept just a little by adding props and changing the facial design you create a terrifying effect that is frightening because it is a warped version of an innocent character.

To create a clown Halloween costume that is happy and fun-loving in tone, your clothing and accessories should be bright in color, baggy, floppy with perhaps a funny twist that makes children laugh out loud. Carrying an object such as drooping flowers provides opportunities for little dramas that children love though even a happy clown costume can frighten small children.

Scary evil clown Halloween costumes can include the same components, but with an added twist. Splash on some fake blood to make them wonder what Bozo was doing behind the circus tent. Add a prop and even the friendliest clown look will have the children in tears. Weapon props are a good choice, a long machete (think Friday the 13th) or a meat cleaver. Go further and add a severed head (I assume I do not have to reiterate the "fake" here). Even the most minor of additions can completely shift the tone of your look.

When using face paints, pretest on a small area to be certain you aren't allergic to the ingredients. Traditional stage makeup (grease paint) is available and gives the best coverage on your face. It is less likely to cause an allergic reaction or to run or fade than cheaper paints created only for Halloween sales. Drawing the mouth shape with a black grease pencil before adding the color will help prevent colors from bleeding.

If the idea of painting gook on your face doesn't appeal you can choose a mask for your clown Halloween costume. For those with sensitive skin or allergies, using a mask is necessary. Though masks can be hot to wear they can be removed and replaced after you cool off. If you rub or scratch your face after applying face paint you'll have to make repairs.

For children's parties your clown Halloween costume should be upbeat and aimed at creating smiles and laughter. For an adult party, the scary evil clown is always a hit. Plan your costume for the look you want to achieve and then follow your plan. Create your own painted face design or find a great mask to wear. Borrow some clothes from your largest friend or relative or browse through local thrift stores. Add little details to make your clown Halloween costume as hilarious or as frightening as you want and go have some fun. Edited by Svetchey Sanorols
