How Skull Rings Came About

By Jeremiah Taylor

Throughout the ages the skull has embodied death and our own mortality and is still considered in this modern era as a powerful symbol. In ancient times the victors in any skirmish would behead foes to display on stakes as a potent representation of their overruning over the enemy, to create fear and to reduce enemy spirits.

Rings for goths were in fashion as far back as the sixteenth century and have persisted to the modern era, rising to popularity as fashion accessories for stars such as Angelina Jolie and Britney Spears. More traditional skull-embossed can be seen on the well-manicured hands of people in the goth scene and bikers alike.

One of the earliest examples of the skull ring can be seen in the history of the cartoon hero, The Phantom, who wore a skull ring, mark of strength, shielding and mortality. This powerful hero's enemies all bore the picture of the skull at their jaws, where he had left his mark whilst dealing out justice in the form of his powerful punches.

Armies worldwide havealso made use of the skull ring as a symbol of strength. It featured prevalently in the uniforms of the German SS troops and was also used by the British Grenadiers. The skull is a representation of mortality and perhaps judgment, an inescapable aspect of life that we cannot escape. This theme here is certainly suitable for humanity. Our only certainty aside from being borninto this world is that we will pass away in the end. The things we do with the time in between those two events is what makes us greater or lesser mortals.

We are constantly reminded of our own short lifespan and that only we,ourselves are in charge of our life. The skull ring has represented the powers of death, destruction and morphing over the past centuries. It symbolize the end of old cycles and the hidden side of humanity.

Popular culture has romanticized the symbol of the skull as a significant force. As an example the unique anti-hero, Ghost Rider. He is a guy who morphs during the night time into the devil's bounty hunter, sent to retrieve the spirits of evil males to return them to Hell. He has a flaming skull for a face, his mount is a magical bike with a skull headlamp.

Emblems such as these in modern culture appeal to our innate feelings of moral justice and even further romanticize the skull's image. Naturally as generations go by, the ideal is lost to myth and legend and only a vague sense of the fundamental idea remains. This is much the case with the skull ring, which manifested in many versions throughout various cultures.

As noticed commonly with the German SS troops and the British Grenadiers, the skull ring was used to utilized to build a sense of camaraderie amongst a particular congregation. Soldiers and warriors would with ease identify with this symbol as death is never more than a moment away at the battlefield. The skull ring stands as an ever present reminder of our mortality.
