The Jobs of Movie Executives

By Larry Booty

Going to the movie theaters is one of the most time honored traditions here in this country. There are many people who are doing important jobs in the film industry. Take the time to check out the names in the opening credits the next time you go to the movie theatres. Take notice of the important people who fill the job of producers and executive producers in the movie credits. Movies are funded and put together by these people; producers and executive producers fill a very important role in the making of movies. There are often many people who are producers and executive producers involved in a film.

The executive producer is usually the one that the rights to the property go to during the planning stage of the film; the rights usually include the play or novel that the movie is based on. The executive producer also usually is the only one who has the job of finding and acquiring investors. For the day to day activities the executive producer will hire a line producer.

When it comes to the pre-production stage of the film, the only crew involved is the casting director and the executive producer. Not long after that the costume designer is added to the team. The costume designer chooses fabrics, colors, and sizes for all the costumes; once the decisions are made, the costume designer makes the clothes.

The next person to join the crew is the director; once the director is added to the mix filming can begin. One of the director's main responsibilities is to decide how the film is going to look; once that is figured out the director can show the actors how to perform to fit that certain look. Whatever you get out of a film is mostly done by the director.

The style of one director will vary widely from the style of another director. Some directors rely on imaginative improvisation. There are some directors, on the other hand, that have every shot planned out perfectly. For a few gifted directors, the job of writer, producer, and director falls all on the same shoulders. There are teams of professionals that often work together in many films; for example, there are many directors and producers that work together on many occasions. When acting isn't quite enough, there are many actors out there today who act and direct all in the same film. The role of the director is obviously one of the most important executive positions in the making of any film.

The roles of the director, the costume designer, the executive producer, and the other producers are extremely important to the making of any high budget film. The executives of a film are the people who deserve credit for the extremely difficult jobs they do.
