Music Lessons For Your Child

By Madeleine Bridgeman

When it comes to learning, the impact of a great teacher cannot be understated. Even if it we are taking a class with a subject we don't particularly like, a great teacher can make this subject interesting. Of course, the opposite also is true, and a bad teacher can make even our favorite subject seem dull. If your child will soon be taking music lessons, the instructor that you choose will have a huge impact on how quickly your child will learn and on how enjoyable the experience will be, so here are some ways to help you choose a great teacher.

You don't necessarily need a Juilliard graduate to teach your child, but it is wise to work with someone who has graduated from some type of music school. This ensures that they have a solid background. It is important not only to ask about their amount of experience but about the ages and stages of their students. After all, even though you might be impressed by a teacher that has taught for 25 years, if their students have all been older and more experienced than your child, it might not be a perfect match. Also, while teachers often instruct for a variety of instruments, they need to have solid experience in the instrument your child wants to play.

Everyone has expectations when the music lessons begin. The student has expectations about the level of fun and the level of difficulty. The parents have expectations about how quickly children learn an instrument as well as how enjoyable the experience will be for their child. Finally, the teacher has expectations about how much work is required of each student to achieve success at various levels. It is important that all three of you have similar expectations. You might simply want to find a creative outlet for your student or perhaps you are hoping for a high level of achievement. Different teachers also have different philosophies about achievement.

While your child will have to practice in order to improve, and they might grumble about this, the overall experience should be positive. Practicing contributes to their overall development of discipline, which can extend into many areas. However, if the whole experience feels more like an unpleasant chore and they dread their music lessons, you probably haven't selected the right teacher. Particularly with beginners, an energetic and enthusiastic and patient teacher can go a long way in encouraging a child to stick with an instrument for many years to come.

In many cases, it is wise to follow your instincts, even if that means selecting a teacher with less experience. It's also fun if your child gets to make some choices along the way. This might mean finding a teacher that allows the child to select some music based on their own individual tastes. Modern music certainly can be used in place of classical, and a good mix of both provides the foundation for an excellent musical education.

If you need a music teacher in Orange County or music lessons in Dana Point, San Clemente or Laguna Niguel, try to find a place that not only offers highly skilled music teachers, but also a music school that focuses on making the whole experience fun and enriching. Options such as Los Rios Rock School are definitely worth considering. Students at this music school not only learn the fundamentals during a weekly private lesson, they also become part of an actual rock band. These student bands perform throughout the year at many popular venues, such as the House of Blues.
