Choosing Artisan Tile For Your Wall

By Freida Michael

People who want lovely, but easy-to-clean wall surfaces in a home or office turn to ceramic. Custom tile is called artisan tile; they are not only water-proof, but they are a major way to enhance decor. Tiles are also used for an interesting effect on roofs, generally unglazed. They can be placed in many locations to fill a space or create a decorative trim, and spice up any plain room with color and pattern.

Rooms look more pristine when they are clean. This pertains particularly to floors, but tiles can be used anywhere, even just as a backsplash. They come in various shapes and mosaic designs and can be selected to taste. Tiles can highlight the uniqueness of the ceramic medium or imitate another such as marble. Concrete, glass, and stone offer exciting visual alternatives to the traditional forms. Enhancements in texture and glazing processes make interior tiles a wonderful design choice.

Tiles were first recorded to be used seven thousand years ago. During those times, only the rich can afford haling their homes tiles. Today, tiles are manufactured easily and in bulk that's why their prices have come down over time. Also because of their assortment, the possibilities of designs are only limited to the imagination.

In choosing tiles, there are many factors to take note of. One of which is the grade it comes with. Grade 1 tiles are heavy duty. Grade 2 tiles are cheaper versions of grade 1 tiles. Both of which are suitable for flooring. Grade 3 tiles are more brittle and are thus better for walls.

Most people use commercial tiles for cost reasons and also volume. If they want something special, they can elect to get those that are artisan made. Each would be unique if that is the desired look. No two are alike, just as with snowflakes. Tiles done by hand are made to order and can take a long time to produce. That is a factor worth considering. But it is often well worth waiting for something creative and imaginative, in essence a work of art.

Small shops specialize in hand done tiles. They have existing designs or can fashion one for the client. Solid clay is cut to order in a specified size and shape. The design, colors, and texture are layered on top before the tile is dried and glazed. There is no end to creativity and imagination when opting for handmade. The right glazes will catch the light and create warmth and natural beauty. It is remarkable that tiles are baked for a day in a kiln at 2,000 degrees.

Once the tiles are created or manufactured (generally of clay), they will be packed and shipped, or picked up by the client. In the designated space, they will be laid out by craftsmen with special skills. There is often a unique order to the design. Proper fitting and grouting is essential. Tiles suitable for walls and floors are to be distinguished. The more elaborate the layout design, the more costly the process.

It is evident that careful attention to the nature and placement of tiles is critical. You cannot adapt or make do. The final usage of the tile dictates the selection every time. Wonderful artisan work can grace a home or other environment and is an optimal choice for those who appreciate their fine beauty.
