By Jason Butler

As an aspiring fashion artist, you have to learn different ways to manipulate fabrics to meet a particular design. It is vital for an artist to learn these methods to have different creations that help one complete in a demanding market. Anyone who intends to learn different fabric manipulation methods should have enough time and tools to make this process a success. This article provides various techniques used by fabric manipulation textile artists.

Consider the applique method. The artist has to sew different types of fabrics on one underlying material. One can stitch the fabrics using hands or sewing machine based on the size of material that one is dealing with and convenience. There are different types of stitches that one can use. This includes the buttonhole, satin and zigzag. Use colors that correspond with each other to create an aesthetic appeal.

Smocking. In this kind of manipulation, the artist stitches together fabrics by creating areas that release a sculptural effect. The effect can lead to raised squares, pinwheel, tubes and other shapes that one will manage to make. You can as well adapt complex patterns and grids that will define where to place the stitches and put the materials together. Look for a material that is not too stiff or thick such as cotton, silk or linens.

Patchwork. Patchwork involves using different patches with different patterns and colors to make one big piece. Piece work is another common name used to describe this kind of method. It is recommendable to maintain colors that match with each other to achieve a continuous material color. The difference between applique and patchwork is the use of an underlying material in applique which is different from the mosaic.

Learn embroidery. Embroidery is a typical technique widely used due to its unique texture. One can use different methods such as the Kantha, Sashiko, shadow and the Chikankary if one is a professional. First-timers should use simple stitching techniques such as the French knots, bullions, and knot stitches. These methods are simple enough to use hand sewing techniques.

Pleating. Pleating involves folding the material back on itself to create a dimensional impression. The artist can press the pleats or iron to make a sharp effect. One is also free to leave the creases without pressing to create a more natural and softer impression. There are three types of pleating methods that one can use namely the pattern, hand, and machine pleating.

Fabric painting. An artist usually uses special paints to create a design on a material. One can also use the color to add a dimensional effect on the fabric. The best material to use is cotton due to its tight weaves. Make sure that you have quality brushes, paints, and design transfer materials for this process to be suitable enough.

It is evident that one can use different manipulation methods based on the design that one wants to achieve. However, every way requires a particular level of attention to be a master of the specific craft. Therefore, it is crucial to maintain patience and learn a particular technique before proceeding to the other. The best learning technique is by using videos or apprenticeship. Make sure that the sources that you rely on have clear explanations that can help you learn accordingly.
