The Basics Regarding Sci Fi Novels

Science fiction is the name of a genre of writing. It involves stories that feature imaginative, not real, content. Typically this involves futuristic science and settings, as well as technology, space, time and light travel, and even extraterrestrials. Sci fi novels are often called literature of ideas, in that they explore potential consequences of innovations. This genre is often used by writers interested in covering literary themes, such as morality, social structure, identity, politics and desire.

No one definition can be used to describe this style of writing. It is known to encompass so many different sub-genres and themes. This style of literature usually includes rational writing about fantasy futures that are actually quite possible realities.

This is similar to the genre of fantasy, in some ways. However, it is different in that its imaginary components are actually possible based on scientific laws. There are some instances in which the elements of these sci fi books are pure imagination and have no scientific basis.

Usually the time of these novels is set in the future. There might be some placed in historical settings that go against what readers know to be true based on facts and records of history. Most stories are told in settings like subterranean Earth, outside worlds or even outer space. Mutants, humanoid robots, aliens and androids are just some of the characters that might be included in these novels.

The people in the novels might utilize teleportation devices, computers, ray guns and other types of technology that readers will be familiar with. Some scientific principles that are contradictory or new may be brought up in these books. Faster-than-light travel and communication, as well as wormholes are just a few examples. These stories often include new or different types of social and political systems.

Characters found in these fictional stories usually have a paranormal ability. They may be involved with mind control, teleportation, telekineses and even telepathy. Typically the settings are in other dimensions or universes. The storyline might even involve traveling between these various dimensions and universes. Many components are linked to sci fi literature, which dates back centuries.

There are many sub-genres, categories and related genres to be discussed when considering this style of writing. This type of literature is usually regarded as hard SF or soft SF. Hard SF refers to that which puts emphasis on getting accurate details, particularly when it comes to natural sciences. These may come close to describing potential realities that could come of advanced technology. There have been instances in which these literary predictions have come to pass. Then there is SF that is focused primarily on social science, which includes economics, psychology, political science, anthropology and sociology.

Some of the sub-genres of this include time travel, superhuman, cyberpunk, social science fiction, space opera, apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic, military SF, alternative history and more. There are also many genres that are similar to this style of writing, such as: ci-fi, horror fiction, fantasy, supernatural, science fantasy, superhero and mystery. People around the globe are fans of this genre of writing and there are many authors who publish novels in this genre.
