What Film Students Should Know About The Romance Genre

By Katie Onson

It's easy to see that the genre known as romance is one of the most popular. I am sure that others can agree with such a sentiment, especially when given the fact that it can help to bring some of the strongest human emotions to the big screen. With these points in mind, though, not every student in film will be able to tackle this genre in the same way. In order to excel, as far as conveying romance in film is concerned, there is plenty to learn.

The first step to creating a film, with romance in mind, is to go about writing as effectively as possible. Now, it isn't like a plot has to be extraordinary complex in order for it to be good. In fact, a simple story can be told well, provided the writing is good in terms of actions, dialogue, and the like. If you are a student who is focused on the creation of film, whether romance is an element of this or not, there's no doubt that strong writing can perpetuate effective film-making at the onset.

Even though romance can be something of a side genre to a film, this doesn't mean that others should be downplayed. Everything from action to horror can include some degree of romance but that doesn't mean that the aforementioned genres should be downplayed. When this is done, they aren't as effective, which is unfortunate considering the desires of the audiences they draw in. Do not forget the initial goal of your own project and you should be fine.

Tropes should also be recognized, as a filmmaker who's focused on incorporating romance. Specifically, you want to make sure that these are avoided, since these can serve to make your film come across as tired and unoriginal. Traits like these do not necessary add to your film; if anything, they take away from what it is you're trying to bring life to. Try to stick to more original twists, if you can, and cast aside the idea of utilizing tropes that have been used so many times before.

No one can argue with the fact that romance can add something special to any kind of film. It's able to show human emotion to the highest degree, provided the right writing and the perfect acting alike are set in place. Once these qualities are cemented, there's no doubt that romance will be shown and make a film that much better. Focus on the aforementioned qualities and your abilities, as a filmmaker, will only become that much stronger.
