The Benefits Of Head Turbans

By Freda Watts

Men have worn head turbans for thousands of years. They are more common in parts of Asia of than anywhere else but can also be found in Africa. Nobleman usually wear them but sometimes women do too, after shaving their hair off. Many religious people wear them, this is especially true of Muslims and Sikhs.

Turbans are worn by Sikhs as an acknowledgement of their god. They wear them to stop dirt getting in their hair too. Jews, Catholics and Hindus occasionally wear them when they have entered church. Sikhs though, always wear turbans because their belief is that God is omnipotent. Sikhs also wear them to make themselves stand out among other people in their community. They don't wear anything over their bears because they can be kept clean without difficulty.

The hear gear was worn originally to denote someone's higher class in society. It separated them from the people of the lower classes. These days, all Sikhs wear them because they want to banish class distinctions. Every Sikh was named Singh or Kaur, as part of this effort to make everyone seem to be from the same class.

The color of the turban doesn't matter. Blue tends to be most popular with youngsters but the elderly usually wear white. Green and red are generally disliked. The reason for the head covering is to offer the hair protection, so the color really isn't important, it's up to each individual to decide which color he wants.

Sikhs don't cut their hair because they believe it is a gift from God. They want to live in the way God made them and respect what they have been given, so cutting their hair would contradict that. Some people think that if you don't cut your hair, then it will just grow and grow. But Sikhs say that the hair, eyebrows and beard stop growing at a certain length because the body knows when to grow and shed it's hair.

Having long hair can benefit your health. It can act as a cover against ultra violet rays from the sun, stopping illnesses such as skin cancer. It can also stop you from getting too hot in the Summer or too cold in the Winter because it creates layer of air between the head and the hair.

Turbans have been used in Europe for many centuries. They have never really been as popular there as in Asia and Africa though. In Great Britain, they are mainly used as a fashion item as oppose to representing any religious view. Most people prefer to wear hats in Europe.

Cancer sufferers who have had chemotherapy sometimes wear turbans. This is to cover any baldness created by the therapy. This is more common among women because men tend to be more comfortable with baldness. Cancer patients often wear caps, night scarves and baseball hats for similar purposes.

Head turbans can create controversy. In Quebec, the football authority banned the wearing of them during matches because of safety fears. However, after pressure from football authorities, they overturned the ban but stated that they should be the same colour as the football shirts to negate any confusion.
