Boca Raton Beach Holiday Guide

By Jony Mozen

This place is a coastal paradise where the stylish oceanfront homes of the wealthy mix with upscale shopping malls and boutiques. Boca Raton is to Florida what Malibu is for Californians on the west coast. Visitors seek out this place because of its fabulous two-mile stretch of pristine beach sand. It's a soul-stirring experience to stand on the beach here in the early morning, when there's no one else around but the seabirds and the dunes, and the only thing in sight is the vastness and shimmer of the Atlantic stretching away towards the horizon.

The locals call it Boca, and it's ideally located just 40 miles from Miami. Both airports on either side at Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale are just 20 minutes away. It's the closest getaway from the big cities on Florida's east coast. People come here to enjoy the peace, soak in the sun and snooze on the beach sand with no crowds or buildings to block the view.

It's perfect for a family vacation or even just a fun-filled day out on the beaches. The city has a sterling reputation as a clean and safe place to live and visit. The beaches are manned by lifeguards from 9 a. M. To 5 p. M. All seven days a week, throughout the year. The brilliant sunshine and clear skies make the beach irresistible to both locals and tourists.

There are three city parks on the oceanfront, right alongside the beaches. A day trip to the beach can therefore be combined with family outings and picnics for those who want to make use of the grills, picnic tables, playgrounds and restrooms. Red Reef is especially suited for those with little kids, since the waters are protected by a man-made reef a few feet offshore where children can be safely taught to swim and snorkel.

Apart from the one-mile beach and lovely waters, another attraction at the 39-acre Red Reef Park is the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center. It's a fascinating place for children and families, offering a butterfly garden and a chance to see all kinds of native species including brown pelicans and manatees. Their aquarium with sharks and sea turtles packs in huge crowds for the live feedings.

Surfers will find a designated surfing area at the southern ends of Red Reef and South Beach Park. For all-out recreation and sports, check out South Inlet Park Beach managed by the county. Visitors can fish from the pier and enjoy a variety of waterfront activities including jet skiing, kayaking, windsurfing, canoeing, sailboarding, beach volleyball and more.

If anything, the nearby Delray Municipal Park has a lot more of this. Visitors can pick and choose from a smorgasbord of fun-filled games and waterfront recreation including swimming, surfing, sailing, windsurfing and snorkeling. This beach has separate areas marked out for flying kites, throwing Frisbees, paddleball, and much more.

People who think of golf as their religion will bump into heaven at the oceanfront golf course. Art lovers will similarly be enthralled by the offerings of the Museum of Art, and nature enthusiasts will start thinking of the Daggerwing Nature Center as their new home. Families may also want to pencil in some time for Sugar Sand Park with its children's museum, science emporium and carousel.
