Places With Same Sex Legal Marriage And Their Benefits To The Society

By Estelle Larsen

The benefits of marriage are both for the couple and the government. Most of the time the government overlooks another kind which is same sex due to a lot of issues. Usually this is because of political, legal, moral, and religious aspects which are addressed in this certain situation.

Providing rights and recognition to same sex couples has no way of infringing the rights of others. Allowing same sex legal marriage is giving and extending the rights that are already being placed on the majority to the minority as well. In short, this is all about protecting the rights of all the people regardless of sexuality.

The first state in the US to legalize this is Massachusetts in 2004. Since then a few other states followed as well. The other places are Washington, Vermont, Rhode Island, New York, New Hampshire, Minnesota, Maryland, Maine, Iowa, Delaware, California, and then also the District of Columbia.

Some states have usually recognized this as a domestic partnership or also known as civil union, but in the federal state, they are not entirely recognized. These are true for the states Hawaii, New Jersey, Illinois, and Colorado. Basically the benefits have a few similarities but they do not offer benefits in the federal state like Social Security and Tax benefits.

Before the United States started legalizing this in some states, Denmark recognized it in 1989. Although Netherlands is the first to actually grant it in 2001. This was then followed by other countries as well including Belgium, Canada, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Portugal, France, Argentina, New Zealand, Brazil, England and Wales, Uruguay, and by 2015 it is expected that Luxembourg would follow as well.

In terms of the benefits towards the community as a whole, the LGBT people has contributed to this in ways regarding social, cultural, financial, vocational, political, and spiritual aspects. The LGBT is a fundamental part of the society for the development and growth of the nation. Taking them away would be a huge loss in the contributions of these people.

Having the LGBT be given equality would benefit other of the minorities as well. This would promote non discrimination values which can lower homophobia and prejudices among other people. Legalizing this would be a huge step to let people all over the country to have a better communication with each other and to understand that these certain relationships are also of equal value. This helps in preventing conflicts between intergroups and promotes cultural diversity as well.

Fostering psychological, physical, and well being is one of the priorities for development of a person and the community. The negative impact on discrimination and exclusion by the government and society defeats this purpose for growth among individuals. This causes a lot of social conflict, psychological distress, and ill health.

Being able to remove these negative impacts and providing equal rights would eliminate relationship discriminations which lets them focus more on psychosocial and overall well being. This allows people to have freedom in achieving the full potential of each individual. And this prevents the waste of time and resources just to engage in standing for basic equality. There will come a time where it is no longer called same sex marriage but as marriage.
