Things To Consider When Choosing the Nail Polish For Your Salon

By Rosalinda R. Rees

There's a lot to take into account if you're planning on opening a nail polish salon. Of course, some of these you've probably already considered - location, build-out, mission statement, starting capital, etc. Then the decision-making doesn't stop there: how you stock your salon and what services you provide are equally important considerations. After all, what you offer and how well you execute it will ultimately control the success of your business. At the end of the day, customers' glowing comments are king.

So, below are the current three most important nail styles. These are the products and procedures your customers CAN'T get at home; these are what are going to make them flock to your door.

Metallics - Some people may still think purple nail polish to be wild and crazy. However sometimes your clients are going to want to take color a step further - and that's when you'll want to whip out the metallic stuff. Available in everything ranging from traditional silver and gold to crazy colors like red, purple and blue, metallic polish gives nails a sexy, futuristic touch - very popular especially for occasions like New Year's Eve.

Decals - It is your job as a manicurist to master the art of fine detailing, at least to some extent. However, sometimes even your most skilled worker will find herself at a loss as to how to create a certain look. When it gets to this point, decals are your best friends. Have a range of themes available, from the cute (flowers, hearts, animals) to the kooky (lightning, skulls, facial features, letters). Be sure you have a variety of jewel decals on hand. If there's one look customers can't get at home, it's a decent bling-bling manicure.

Gel (shellac) nail polish- Over the past few years, gel (also known as "shellac") has become one of the hottest nail treatments out there. The reasons are simple: gel nail polish is thicker, harder, and longer lasting than regular acrylic nail polish. Since customers can't get it at home, it's a critical thing to include in your list of offerings. Gel application requires time, a steady hand, and above all else, a UV lamp. Train yourself and your employees in gel nails before opening. Also make sure you keep only top-of-the-line polish in your store.
