Why Destination Weddings Are Different From Elopements

By Joshua Lynn

Basically, destination wedding is a type of wedding that is held somewhere out of town. Some bridal couples even choose some far-off paradise as the venue for their wedding, where only a limited number of guests are invited. This is probably the reason why some people can't help but think of this type of wedding as a fancy elopement.

That kind of assumption however is far from true. Destination weddings and elopements are two distinct types of wedding and their only likeness lie on the need to hold the wedding out of town.

Wedding destinations need time for the wedding preparation. This means bridal couples will have to exhaust their choices by doing a lot of research, browsing several websites, making many phone calls and doing some comparisons to determine the right location for the wedding.

In contrast, elopements are often spur-of-the-moment, whirlwind affairs. Thus, the focus of couples that have eloped is to exchange marriage vows as soon as possible. They do this by looking for places where obtaining marriage-license requirements is easy.

The preparation for destination weddings thus requires more effort. Holding a destination wedding means dealing with different vendors and making decisions about these wedding elements: flowers, pictures, music for the ceremony and reception, wedding dress and wedding cake. Elopements can do without these elements.

Moreover, elopements are somewhat secretive because couples who have eloped do not usually announce their upcoming wedding. These are also usually a small ceremony because elopements seldom involve anyone other than the groom and the bride.

But if a couple don't have the intention of keeping their upcoming wedding a secret from anyone and they're having it somewhere out-of-town, then their choice is clear: they want a destination wedding.

Of course, a destination wedding will not be complete without hiring a wedding photographer. A destination wedding photographer will help couples capture the significant moments of their wedding and the splendor of the place as well. Bridal couples can consider choosing a photojournalist that specializes in destination wedding photography especially if they are eyeing their wedding photos to be more of candid, natural-looking and minute-moment shots.
