For Many A Famed Composer Nyc Was The Preferred Place To Build Up Their Musical Profession

By Lora Jones

In addition, for the celebrated composer nyc was the provider of creativity, musical talent and incredible sites for it all to take place. Exploring this cultural side to the city can be of much interest to both the enthusiast and those that just enjoy their music.

New York is the birthplace for quite a few different styles of music. For example hip hop, disco, salsa and punk rock all found their origins here. Although not having their origins in NYC, jazz, rock, folk and blues styles have found a welcoming home here and many devoted fans.

It is the belief of some that the many different styles of music thrive here due to the divergent and large numbers of population groups that have successfully settled in the city. More evidence of the large number of styles is the successful classical style, including operas and ballet which is also a dominant force throughout the region.

Of the many great composers who have graced the music halls of the city, several will be especially remembered for their contributions. Leonard Bernstein is certainly in this category. Also a famous conductor, amongst others he directed both the NYC Symphony and Philharmonic Orchestras. His major classical compositions include Prelude, Fugue and Riffs for solo clarinet and jazz ensemble; and Serenade for violin, strings and percussion. But it is possibly his contribution to the hit musical West Side Story that for many he will be especially remembered.

Another artist who stands out is Bob Dylan. As a composer, song writer and through his performances he became a dominant force in the music of the sixties and seventies. Although born in Minnesota, he made New York his home in 1960. Songs like Blowin in the Wind became best sellers and became a means of expression for his opposition to war and social injustice.

George Gershwin is another great name who was born, bred and worked in New York. Among his massive volumes of work are the haunting melodies Rhapsody in Blue and Summertime. Amazingly George left school at only 15 and started his professional career by playing in clubs. Many of these were in the Tin Pan Alley area. Tragically a brain tumour caused the premature death of this genius of music at age thirty-eight.

Aaron Copland was born and grew up in Brooklyn right in the heart of the city. An enormous figure in the world of composing, Copland also taught, authored several books and later conducted the performance of his own works with various orchestras. His music was perceived to be in touch with the American people and as such was classified by some as Populist. The pieces Appalachian Spring, Billy the Kid and Rodeo became very successful amongst his fans.

For many a composer nyc proved to be the place that was either a natural breeding ground or a magnet for artists composing their way into history. The list of grows ever longer. Just start by adding Billy Joel and John Lennon. Consider William Schuman, who, had he followed his first passion may have become a base ball player, but became a prolific producer of music, including 8 symphonies and went on to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music. Yes the list goes on and on and indeed is still growing to this very day.
