Africa is a huge continent, and very famous for its national parks and wildlife reserves. There is no shortage of places in Africa in which to enjoy an African photo safari. Africa has no shortage of wonderful locations for wildlife and nature photography. The most well known locations are: Tanzania's Serengeti, Kenya's Masai Mara and Botswana's Okavango. There are also many other national parks in Africa with amazing wildlife, but the best parks are in the east and southern Africa

Safaris are well established in Eat Africa (Kenya and Tanzania) and it is easy to join a safari. However, a photo safari requires a different approach as an ordinary safari is unlikely to give you the time and opportunities to capture the images you want. You will also find them very crowded with tourists who are also trying to get that amazing shot.

South Africa has many excellent but lesser known wildlife safaris. The better locations are in Botswana, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe. These reserves have less visitors making them more relaxed for photography.

Botswana is often considered to be among the best locations to enjoy wildlife. Herds of animals are smaller than those in East Africa making it easier to photograph individual animals. There is also a wide variety of large mammals to photograph. However, this makes it harder to see animal mass movements, which is better in the East African parks. The authorities also limited the amount of visitors so it is less crowded and more time is spent at one location.

Botswana also has the advantage of being further away form population centers and it is possible to go on safari for days without meeting another person. It is possible to see and photograph large mammals in Botswana.

Most safaris are done with 4X4 Land Cruisers or Land Rovers, which are perfect for photography as they are usually easy to get your camera outside, while you stay safely inside.

When choosing which photography gear to take along you need to consider a number of important factors. It will be helpful to have a DSLR with a fast frame rate to stop action. You may also want a DSLR that provides good quality images at higher ISO's. The lens is also very important. You will require at least a 500mm focal length that has a wide aperture of at least f2.8. This is make sure that you can gather enough light if you are in low light conditions.

Most safaris spend a good few days at the same location with tent camps. This allows you more time to capture the magical wildlife moments. In order to get the best results the vehicle should stop and the engine turned off to prevent camera vibration. Many professional photographers organize photo safaris in Africa, which are specifically designed to photographers. This can be a fantastic way to learn how to photograph wildlife.
