Secrets To More Impactful Wedding Photography

By Marley Smith

The challenges of wedding photography are distinctly difficult from those of other genres. While landscape photographers wait for the right light to approach, and macro photographers search for new species of the minutest creatures, wedding photographers aspire to combine great lighting, composition, as well as action in one day. The biggest challenge of all? There are no second takes in weddings.

So how could you take photographs that are satisfying not just to you but, more importantly, to your clients? The following are some essential shooting tips you might find useful one of these days.

Shoot from the hip, from the outsie in, and through curtains and leaves. While straightforward shooting is proven effective, there are uncharted paths in photography you may want to try out, such as bending over and shooting the flower girl playing with her curls during the wedding ceremony. Search for curtains and leaves, and incorporate them in your photo. Pictures taken from this angle will give the viewer a sense of mystery, like they are looking from afar into the scene. During the bride's preparation time, when bridesmaids flank her to button up her dress, put a stray strand in place, or assist her with her shoes, go outside the room and shoot the fuss from the outside.

Make creative use of your ISO. Many photographers avoid using high ISO and choose the camera flash instead. Seasoned photographers would tell you that adding a bit of grit and grain to your photographs can actually look appealing when done the right way. High ISO in poorly lit areas often turn out perfect when there are movement and people in the photograph..

Aim for action photos, particularly when crowds of people are involved (usually in the middle of the wedding reception). Dances and other performances are captured best with the motion, so don't ditch the slow shutter speed just yet. Not all blurred photographs are flawed.

Capture candid scenes with straightforward compositions. The less cluttered the composition, the better. This is a task that wide-aperture lenses would do excellently, and most of the time, they turn out into some of your best photos of the day. An 85mm f/1.4 or f/1.8 is a great choice, and so is the 24-70mm f/2.8. Cheaper alternatives are the 35mm f/1.8 as well as the 50mm f/1.4 and f/1.8.
