How To Come Up With The Best Web Design Quotes

By Doris Rivas

For a newbie freelancer, coming up with the best web design quotes can be a daunting task. Generally, breaking every aspect of the job and how much time it takes to complete can really be helpful. Here are a few tips on pricing your work as a web designer.

To work efficiently, it is very important to have a job outline for the project at hand. Basically, this helps manage expectations for both the developer and the client. A good outline contains the required tools for the job, type of activity that is going to be accomplished, the amount of time these tasks will take and the expected results.

Usually, the rule of thumb is to provide an hourly rate for the whole project. As a novice freelancer, it can be hard to quote the exact time for a particular task but this will get better as you become more experienced.

A typical website requires several web pages, a startup page and may be a navigator from one page to the other. It may also require a header and footer. Generally, to design and test this may take a few hours to several days. Usually, this will depend on how complex the website page is and the skill level of the webmaster. In the case above, let's assume the programmer takes three hours.

Adding in special features to the website. The customer may also need the webmaster to add in a few special features to the website like blogs, shopping cart, database configuration etc. To do all these, the webmaster was able to take say two hours.

The website will also need domain registration and web hosting configuration. Usually, this may take several hours more so if the designer needs to make a few calls. Generally, a client may need the webmaster to register a new domain or work with an already existing one. For this task, let's assume the programmer takes around four hours.

By now, the website should be up and running though it will require regular updates. As a freelancer, it is always good to discus how this work will be billed well in advance. You can decide to work with a fixed monthly cost for the maintenance and updates or you could set up an hourly rate. Generally, this will solely depend on what works for both of you.

So in a recap, your web design quotes will be as follows; designing of the website three hours; incorporating special features two hours; web hosting and domain registration four hours, total number of hours for the whole project nine hours. Since the client may require you to do some changes on the website once you're done you can multiply the nine hours by maybe a factor of 1.5. So, the total billable hours will be 13.5.
