Speed Up Your Music Production Time

By Frank Lubsey

Have you ever been away from your studio when a great musical idea strikes you? To make matters worse, by the time you get home, the idea is gone forever? If you've ever experienced this, you'll realize the importance of speed when it comes to music production. The faster you can get an idea into concrete form, the better your chances of actually making a good beat based off of that idea. Today's article will focus on some techniques that can help increase your speed as a producer. By incorporating these ideas, you'll have a better chance of capturing creative lightning when it strikes.

Templates: One of the quickest ways to save time is the use of templates. Templates can involve having your commonly used instruments already loaded when you start up your DAW. The key idea is that as a composer, there a certain patterns or things that we use over and over again. Instead of repeating this process every time, have some of these instruments pre-loaded automatically into your system.

Custom Drum Kits: One time-intensive part of hip-hop music production is selecting the right drum sounds for your tracks. Often, it can take many hours to find the right drum sounds that complement each other. Invest the time to develop your own drum kits that you can easily load when doing a song. That way, when you are in the moment, you won't have to spend hours searching for sounds that complement each other. With a few mouse clicks, you'll have drum kits that you load at your disposal.

Categorizing: Another time-saving idea is to group all of your sounds at your disposal into recognizable categories. Some virtual instruments already do this, and most hardware instruments are grouped into banks. However, many vsts do not do this. Also, many drum sounds are broken down into top-level drum categories such as "snare" and "kick", but not into specific categories such as "rimshot" and "sustained kick". The goal of categorization is to find the exact sound you are looking for when you need it.

Versioning: One final technique is to re-use the instruments and vst settings of a beat that you made that you really liked. The resulting sound will be similar to the beat you like since you are essentially recycling the same vsts, however, since you are using the same vsts, the time intensive parts of selecting sounds has already been done for you.

Try experimenting with some of these time saving techniques in your next production. The more efficient you become as a producer, the more your chances of capitalizing on inspiration will increase.
