Why Light Is An Essential Ingredient In Photography

By Mavic Best

Both amateur and seasoned photographers question themselves what constitute great pictures. Serious photographers - no matter how adept they become at their craft through years of practice - will most probably repeat on asking themselves about this matter.

If the basis for a great photograph would be the people's opinion, for certain the old adage that says "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" can be an acceptable answer. But people's opinion change with time, as we all know. Hence, this may not be accepted as a final and absolute answer.

It is true that there are numerous variables that can be considered in the quest for the attributes of a great picture. Professional photographers (including singapore wedding photographers), however, can all agree that there are a few constant reference points that will help define the great picture.

Photography lighting is one of these few fixed reference points that is fundamental in producing a great photo. This particular photography element can make even the most ordinary subject interesting. No wonder photography lighting is considered as a vital element across the wide fields of photography - from still life to portraiture, from outdoor to indoor.

Once a photographer gets familiar with different lighting techniques, he can make great pictures using just any form of light source. This tells how essential lighting truly is in photography.

In terms of indoor photography, lighting is an ingredient that will tell how capable the photographer is in manipulating artificial light forms. It is quite a common knowledge that studio photographers principally rely on artificial light. Hence, studio photographers have to exhibit real skill on how to control and manipulate the light that comes from various lighting technology so they can achieve their desired result.

However, it isn't appropriate to assume that indoor photographers, with all their powerful range of artificial lighting gears, are skillful than outdoor photographers. The latter - however it can be tempting to say that they simply depend on luck - calls for lighting skills that are different from indoor photography.

Studio photographers need to understand the science of electric lighting technology, while outdoor photography demands extensive knowledge on both sun's seasonal and diurnal effect as well as the ability to predict the weather.
