Sports Rivalries: How Legendary Games And Players Are Made

By Antonio Mosinard

Rivalries are necessary in creating great franchises in professional sports. Rivalries usually create a lot of hype and make the games more exciting for the fans. If not for rivalries, some sports would not have its best moment and individual performances. Without rivalries we never would have experienced the Magic and Bird era in NBA basketball. Rivalries make winning traditions much sweeter than just playing with a team you don't have a history with.

Here are some of the great sports rivalries in the recent years.

Football: the Indianapolis Colts against the Patriots

Though these two teams have been division rivals for a while since 1970 but it wasn't until Indianapolis was relocated to another division that their rivalry became more recognized in the NFL. It was the quarterback battles in the patriot and Colts roster that led to this fabled rivalry. The Colts seemed to be underdogs as they had 6 consecutive losses against their rivals.

The Colts had their payback when they defeated the Patriots and later win Super Bowl XLI After that, the next two matchups were split and there was just a small difference in the final score. Their latest match up was won by the Patriots preventing the Colts from stealing another game. To know their chances of meeting each other in the playoffs, check the Patriots and Colts schedule.

Basketball: Heat Vs Celtics

One of the newest rivalries is between the two Eastern Conference contenders; Miami and Boston. The Heat do not have a history as rich as the Boston Celtics' but they suddenly became a fitting opponent in the Eastern Conference when they acquired their big three two seasons ago. The rivalry continued for two seasons as the battle of the big three's.

In the games that mattered or the NBA playoffs, Miami ended the Boston Celtics' season two years in a row. In both times Miami went through to the NBA finals and won the crown on their second attempt. The game's newest rivalry became even more interesting due to the fact that one of Boston's member of the championship line up four seasons ago; Ray Allen, signed up with the heat for another shot at the title. If they met again this season in the playoffs, the series will surely be intense.
