A Lesson On How To Draw Cartoon Characters Step By Step

By Shanna McNeil

When drawing cartoons, it is always important to follow an outline so that the finished product will be nice. What most professional artists do is that they first draw a diagram on what the shape of the character is and follow it meticulously. So for those who would want to create character as well, here is how to draw cartoon characters step by step.

Before actually creating the character, one must first draw a framework made out of lines. These lines will enable the artist to have an easier time drawing the pose of the character. However, if he is making a fully body drawing of a cartoon that is doing some dramatic pose, he should draw lines to guide him.

Of course the very first body part that an artist would deal with would be the head. To start off, he must make a circle first and some lines on the center to indicate where he will put the eyes, nose and mouth. After that, he can fill in the details and start sketching the parts of the face. When he is done with that, he can go on to the other parts of the head like the hair, the ears, or the neck.

After the head is done, obviously the upper body would be next. In order to make the upper body, he has to start first with a big oblong and little oblongs attached to the upper corners of the big one for the shoulders. From there, he can slowly trace the body and create the body shape that he wants. From the shoulders he can then start going towards the arms and the hands.

For the arms, one must first start by drawing two sausage shapes to have a guide on where to put the arms. Then, he has to put two circles on the end of the sausages to indicate where the hands will be. Now that he has the framework, he can add details on the arms and design it the way he wants it to. As for the hands, all he has to do is put fingers on top of the small circle as the circle will serve as the palm of the character.

The final part would be to sketch the legs and the lower body. Here, he should draw two long sausages that are attached to a big circle that is connected to the upper body. The big circle will be the lower body while the two sausage shapes are obviously the legs. The artist must take note however, that if he wants to create a female character, he has to make the hips a little wider.

When the whole drawing of the character has been completed, the artist should put some extra details to add more effect. One good way to do that would be to shade some areas of the character to make it look more alive. However, in order to do this, the artist must first have some knowledge about lighting and shadows so that he knows where he must shade.

So basically, that is how to draw cartoon characters step by step. As an artist, one should never rush when drawing cartoons because it will ruin the work. Always remember to sketch slowly and surely while paying attention to all the details.
