By Audra Olson

The sci-fi genre of writing is a very enjoyable one for younger children. This is because they get to explore the realms of their imagination whilst still enjoying the exploration of new ideas and concepts and meeting new characters. There are science fiction books for kids to enjoy at almost any age, which is good news when it comes to getting them started on this genre early. The following is comprised of some of the best available titles.

The Little Prince is a very famous novella written by a French writer and aristocrat named de Saint-Exupery, first name Antoine. It happens to be the most translated book in French. It also holds the title of the best book in France of the 20th century. It has been adapted over the years for the screen, stage, ballet and opera.

The story is one of a young prince not from Earth. He actually lives on an asteroid. The book is filled with metaphors and lessons, that can be as much of a learning experience for adults as for the children reading the book. Antoine de Saint-Exupery is also responsible for the book's illustrations.

Martha Weston is the author of a book called Space Guys! Its age group is 4 years to 8 years old. It is a book which contains rhyming text, which contributes to it being an easy read as well as fun. Its plot follows a night in the life of a young boy who is being visited by robot-like aliens who have landed in a tree outside his house.

Jane Leslie Conley's book entitled The Rudest Alien On Earth is a book about a shape-shifting alien called Oluu, who comes to Earth to learn about life here. She ends up on a farm in Vermont where she begins to take the shape of different animals living there. However, no matter what she morphs into, she always find herself in some sort of predicament. This book is recommended for children ages ten to fourteen years old.

If your child really enjoys reading the sci-fi genre, then you should probably invest in a series of books to keep them appeased. One example is the Commander Toad series. Written by Jane Yolen, the seven works in the series tell of the brave adventures of a toad Commander who runs the Star Warts spaceship with his crew.

The Danny Dunn series is written by Jay Williams and runs from the fifties straight through to the seventies. The protagonist Danny Dunn is a young scientist whose adventures are unbelievable. The works reflect the mania of science-related things in the middle of the twentieth century. There are many interesting ideas presented throughout the series, including the homework machine and the concepts of invisibility and shrinking.

If you have a child in elementary school, then a book like The Hunger Games may be just the thing they would enjoy. Suzanne Collins' story is one of the science fiction books for kids that has been turned into a blockbuster movie. The plot follows the experiences of children literally fighting one another for survival, as they have been forced to compete like gladiators by the dictators who run the totalitarian society in which they live.
