For many schoolboys it's the classic pipe dream and they look up to and idolize those musical legends that populate the charts, album covers, magazine inserts and anything even remotely musical and related to rock and roll. Rock bands are notorious, electric guitarists revered and blues guitarists admired. Despite their differences in sound though they all have one thing in common and that is their immense popularity and legendary status. Who are the ones that make it to the top though? We take a look.
Well no list would be complete without mentioning the legendary Eric Clapton. Some of his most famous hits include Cocaine and Layla and he formed a part of many bands that dominated the musical mainstream for numerous years. His ride, as with many high profile guitarists was by no means smooth but his legacy is most definitely and undeniably his wonderful music.
In his illustrious career he won seventeen Grammy awards, was the only artist to be conducted not once, not twice but three times into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and was awarded a CBE at Buckingham Palace in recognition of his services to music. Another notable achievement was his founding of the Crossroads Centre, a medical facility for recovering substance abusers; Clapton was a recovering alcoholic and drug addict. His brilliance has never been diminished though and he's widely perceived as one of the most influential guitarists of all time.
The next on our last has a rather more upsetting ending to his story having died without making it into his thirties. Jimi Hendrix had a troubled time during his four years at the top with his band The Jimi Hendrix Experience. He abused drugs, alcohol and was reported as being violent too. Despite these negative components of his story though his brilliance and mastery of the electric guitar has earned him his place in the record books. He's remembered as a legend that has contributed vast amounts to music and was unbelievably talented.
Finally we come on to the iconic front man of Guns N Roses, Slash. Guns N Roses' first album sold an eye watering 28 million copies when it was released, something which at the time of its release was almost unthinkable. He also went on to solo success releasing two albums and has been conducted in to the rock and roll hall of fame.
