It is something ununderstood by people and can arguably be considered art by some. One must then learn what this kind of painting is about in order to know it better.

This has gained popularity after World War II. It started in America and then became known in other countries. It is very influential in making New York an art capital. It has its roots in surrealism as they can also focus on spontaneity. This style has made use of various applications of paint that is not the traditional way. They can make use of dripping paint, hardened brushes, and colliding colors.

You can see high intensity in the strokes of the painting. The strokes itself can reveal the action of the painter, hence the name action painting. It becomes a process then and appreciating the process is part of appreciating the painting.

Ideas of many types can be expressed through this. The subconscious and the spiritual can be shown. Idiosyncrasy, anarchy, and rebellion can also be emitted with it. Distress, and anxiety, and inner turmoil can be drawn inspiration from. The artist's feelings can be expressed in innovative, experimental, and new ways.

While the painting may look like a mess, careful planning is actually placed in it. The artist will have to plan carefully to get the desired outcome. They will also mix in spontaneity, chance, and abstraction in it.

Americans were the foremost AbEx painters. Noted action painters are Mark Tobey, Jackson Pollock, and Willem de Kooning. Noted color field painters are Kenneth Noland, Mark Rothko, and Jules Olitski.
