Creating The Best Dubstep Music

By Jason Johann

Producing the best dubstep songs is not too hard if you have the patience and time to invest. You will find many different types of production methods that are commonly used today. Some methods may be so secret that they are impossible to discover. However, if you use your resourcefulness and creativity, you can make some excellent sounds.

There are a lot of things to digest in your quest to produce electronic music. This includes sound design, drums, and synthesis. In fact, all of these things can overwhelm the novice producer. You might search the Internet for a good Skrillex bass tutorial and not find exactly what you need. If you are unfamiliar with Massive and FM8 you could feel completely lost.

First remember, take one step at a time. Get yourself a DAW (digital audio workstation) and a relatively decent computer. You can use either FL Studio, Cubase, Ableton Live, Reason or Logic. There are others out there but these are the most popular.

Once you have your DAW, spend some time playing around and experimenting. In time, you will develop some degree of familiarity with the program and all of the effects. Now is the time to put your new found knowledge into action. Surely you know what you like and what your listeners appreciate. After all, you have knowledge of the finest producers and DJs. Remember, all of this comes to a screeching halt as you are not enjoying these sounds as a consumer. You are now a producer.

As a producer, you need to dissect each song and look closely at each part. First, delve deeply into the structure of the song. This is what you need to reproduce. Count each measure and bar, and understand the intro, drop, build, chorus, and verse. If you are unfamiliar with bars and measures, study about them.

If this is your first, second or even third production, I would highly recommend downloading a loop package with beat loops, synth loops, bass loops etc. Having these loops will give you the semi coherent materials to work with, which is helpful for the beginning producer.

It's like putting together a puzzle using relatively large pieces. There is no shame in doing a 100 piece puzzle before increasing the difficulty and graduating to puzzles of 5000 or more pieces. Producing a dubstep song, especially with glitches and samples these days, is more like putting together a sonic puzzle than anything.

After you understand the concept of producing electronic music, you then can proceed to the next level. You will delve more deeply into learning synths and the best way to begin is with presets. This makes it much easier on you. Yet, you will eventually need to design your own sound, and you can have a lot of fun creating the best dubstep music that you possibly can.
