How to be a successful rock star

By Mario Peebles

Can you imagine yourself standing on stage, in front of tens of thousands of screaming, adoring fans? Or maybe listening excitedly to the top 40, to discover if you are on the top spot this week or not?

It would be difficult to go it alone, (well actually you could be a singer but that isn't what we are discussing here) so the best thing to do is group. You might have friends who would want to but even with them you could be missing some vital pieces.

Between you and your friends you might be able to get everyone you need together to form your band but if you're missing a drummer or some other vital member then try searching on line, using sites like craigslist or gumtree to find other aspiring musicians who could join your band.

Forming your band with people you already know will probably work out better in the long run but there's nothing to say that you won't find musical chemistry with people you haven't met yet. Plus, if things go sour you're not running the risk of losing a friendship as well as a band member. Once you have your members together, you've gotta come up with a great name for your new band.

Your preferred style of music could have a bearing on the name you chose. The Pink Fluffy Kittens might not be the best name for a death metal band, for example. Passive Psychosis however could be a good one.

As well as the type of music you play, your prospective audience might have an influence on the name of your band. You don't want to alienate potential new fans or limit your chances of exposure by having a name that's offensive or not broadcast-able.

As the old saying goes, practice makes perfect and even if you're not planning on being perfect, you still need to practice. In order to do that, you are going to need a place to play. Maybe you or one of your friends has a garage or basement or somewhere similar that you can use for practising in. If you don't then you will have to look into booking rehearsal space.

Write some songs, write as many as you can, rehearse, perfect, rewrite, then select the best ones.

Once you are ready try to play at some venues - doesn't matter how small, just get the experience of playing live and gigging as well as getting your music heard. You never know who's going to be in the audience listening.

When you start out you are going to have to be your own marketing department. To spread the word you can use old school methods like flyering as well as more up to date things like getting your own website, Facebook page, twitter account, etc to get your name known and connect with your fans.

You can upload your songs to websites like soundcloud and youtube then tell people about it so that people can listen to it and hopefully share it so that it takes on a viral quality and more and more people get to know your sound.

When all is said and done, don't expect to become an overnight sensation, if you do well done but until you make it, don't stop believing. Hold on to that feeling.

Don't live your life wondering 'what if?' give it a try and find out.
