Tips To Selecting The Best Trumpet Mouthpiece

By Casandra Cotton

Every brass player needs the proper mouthpiece to produce a quality sound. The one that comes with the instrument may not suit your individual needs. Selecting the best trumpet mouthpiece corrects breath control and helps you produce the sound you are looking for. You will also have more comfort and be able to play longer without aches and pains.

Your facial structure like the teeth and jaw is very important when fitting yourself with the correct piece. To have the top tone quality your lip shape is very imperative. You will find that it's much easier to play and a have a good intonation if it fits. This will take some time and experimenting before you find the right one.

A medium width sized cup is usually enough for the first time or beginner trumpet players. It has the correct rim thickness and control. It also has the proper size backbore, cup depth and width. As you learn your instrument more and get better at playing you may want to switch to a larger piece.

If you want a more vivid sound a small cup can help with that. In the beginning it may be hard to hit the higher notes but a shadowed cup is easier to use. Deep tones are made by a larger cup. When you are looking for dark sounds, a larger cup is helpful. If the shape is more pointed the better quality you will have.

Because of the differences in face shape for each person each note will sound different on the same mouthpiece. What may work for you will not work for the next person. Your needs are vital to a good quality sound and should not be substituted.

The backbore is very imperative to creating a good sound. It's so easy to overlook it because it is very small and not visible to the eye. The tighter the backbore is not he instrument the sound will be more of good quality. If it's to large then your sound could be placid.

The rim lends a hand with the flexibility and range for the lips to move. A round narrow rim suggests the greatest movement but is usually for beginners. It also helps reduce endurance. But because of the shape it can put more pressure on the lips causing aches and pains. So for the finest comfort you are looking to get a flat and wide rim piece. It is the most comfortable but your lips are not able to move as much as with the other one.

As always clean your piece at least once a week. Dirt comes from everywhere and can affect your sound quality. You should use a mouthpiece brush when cleaning your instrument to avoid any damage to your instrument.

The sound quality will be easy to produce if you choose the best trumpet mouthpiece. There are many different types of pieces so it is very important you choose the one that brings the most comfort and sound to you. Always think about your physical facial features as a guideline to finding the right one.
