Options For Watching TV On The Computer

By Maggie Delaney

In these economically challenging times, the cost of cable TV or satellite subscription has become very unmanageable for many. It doesn't help that these charges are monthly expenses which eat away at people's monthly budgets.

Here's the good news -- such expense for watching TV is not needed anymore in this age of technology. Instead of paying for cable or satellite, you can simply watch tv on your computer.

There are a large number of options available to watch tv on your computer. You can see movies on your PC without paying for premium channels like HBO or Showtime or paying still another monthly fee to services such as Netflix. You can watch shows from several different countries and in different languages on your computer! And you can watch sports, such as tennis matches, football games, or basketball games, right on your computer.

Some options are based on watching previously uploaded shows online. One such option is Youtube, where other people upload videos of TV shows, etc. But there are several issues with such options. For one thing, there is always a time lag. So if you want to watch something live, you are out of luck. This become particularly important when you want to watch something like a football game, which loses a lot of its meaning when you don't watch it live. Also, the quality of such options may not be very good.

There is software available, which can be downloaded to your computer, and which is used for watching tv on your computer. Most of these request a small one time payment, but compared to the monthly cable charges, this seems like nothing! A huge benefit of this option is that the coverage of the shows you get may be quite varied, and often include international channels as well. One extremely popular software used for viewing a wide gamut of shows, as well as several foreign channels is Satellite Direct. The live watching ability that this software provides makes it particularly suitable for watching sports.

Yet other options include watching shows online provided by television networks themselves. Many of the popular networks such as NBC, ABC etc. have several shows available online. However, these are clearly limited in their offerings to the shows on that particular network. Also, mostly these networks provide only a few episodes of each show.

As is clear, there are numerous choices for watching tv on a computer. But the right choice for any one person is dependent on several factors, such as exactly what he is looking for, how much he is willing to spend, and so on. So make your choice after considering all this.
