The Annual North Carolina Jazz Festival

By Marissa Potter

Individuals have learned to appreciate the wonderful sounds of traditional jazz music. In fact, thousands of venues host festivals each year showcasing many popular artists who are debuting some of their latest music. The North Carolina Jazz Festival is one such event which is held in February each year over a three day weekend.

This is much different from the many festivals that generally host large concerts during either the spring or summer where they are located outdoors. Normally venues are chosen specifically to accommodate as many fans as possible. However, this particular one, held during February, is indoors where patrons can truly enjoy the music in style and comfort without weather concerns.

Having started in 1980, this is arguably one of the oldest festivals in the country and takes place in a ballroom at the Wilmington Hilton Riverside Hotel in the city of Wilmington, NC. The event showcases a blend of what is known as traditional and classic jazz which true music lovers enjoy. Rarely are fans disappointed by the talent and styles they hear at the event.

The economy has negatively impacted attendance at the most festivals lately. However, music lovers find that it is hard to resist making the trip to the event where they know they will enjoy the music, their favorite artists, as well as visiting with people who have become friends over the years at these events. Thus, many travel each year from all over to North Carolina to enjoy some of the talent that is showcased.

Each year the festival is enjoyed by fans of all ages. It is not hard to feel this is a melting pot with people from all backgrounds and ages from 20s to 80s enjoying the festivities. One of the recent additions to the schedule is where aspiring musicians in their teens are given the opportunity to play along with great artists. This is only one of the many things that have been added recently which attract younger fans to the event.

The cabaret style setting of this festival is much more conducive to this type of indoor venue. It fosters a completely different environment than what is found at the huge festivals which are held all over the country where fans and artists are far apart and screens must be used for fans to see the artist. The ballroom setting is much more intimate and fans are able to truly feel the music as well as become acquainted with others who are enjoying the event.

Being able to interact with other music lovers as well as the artists themselves is a major reason many could not think of giving up the pleasure of going to this event each year. The thought of attending the huge festivals less appealing since it is too large to be intimate. Many believe it is impossible to even compare the two types of events after they have come to truly enjoy and appreciate the intimacy afforded in the smaller venues.

Then there are many that feel smooth jazz festivals may very well be the more popular of the two events. However, most true jazz music aficionados will discount smooth jazz altogether stating it cannot possibly be compared to true classic or traditional. Regardless of the opinion one might have, there are those that prefer one over the other. For those that attend the North Carolina Jazz Festival each year, they continue to enjoy wonderful music in a beautiful setting.
