The Benefits Of Mobile Shelving

By Chloe Gib

Museums are never able to show more than a small portion of their treasures. The safe-keeping of hundreds of fragile and unique items remains a major concern for curators. One method of retaining these sometimes irreplaceable objects is by utilizing mobile shelving units.

Museum storage is complex. Such things as art work, artifacts, textiles, and butterfly collections all need to be accommodated and protected. Temperature and humidity control, protection from dust and grime, and convenient access are all factors which need careful consideration.

Movable shelving bays allow for substantial increases in museum storage. Custom designed cabinets and shelving allow for projected increases and the unique requirements of individual organizations. As museums change in their retrieval and retention requirements, so flexible storage cabinets allow for this growth in repository records.

Static shelving is much less compact than modern mobile components. All combinations of, for instance, textile racks and/or sliding drawers and trays are possible, giving curators and archivists room for optimum flexibility. Vertical and horizontal partitions in addition to adjustable shelves give great scope for storing valuable artworks. Aerated systems are also an option giving museums even greater choice in their options.

When large quantities of physical materials need to be kept, a compact repository is typically required and provides an ideal option. Best use can be made of the available area with the high density storage made possible by movable museum cabinets. Innovative design of mobile cabinets provides secure retention of objects and allows multipurpose applications. There is no need for much surface preparation due to the use of aluminum tracks. These are low profile and allow smooth, facile operation and easy relocation. Precision bearings and overhead stabilizers are other practical features.

A rotary handle allows easy manipulation of roller racking or mobile aisle components. The movement of the bays may be assisted by mechanical, electric or electronic means. Electrical motors are operated by the push of a button allowing automatic shifting to left or right. Units can be programmed to open and close. Access may be restricted to authorized personnel by the use of codes. Integrated lighting is another option as are open units as opposed to fully enclosed, lockable components.

Manufacturers have not forgotten safety issues. Built-in detection systems give total coverage of an aisle and are fully automatic, averting the possibility of accidental injury to personnel or damage to objects. An automatic battery backup is an added safeguard. Mobile shelving units are versatile and have many advantages in a museum situation.
